Subsidised daycare spaces meet only 38 per cent of demand in Switzerland. and the shortage is expected to worsen with an expected surge in demand, according to a study by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

The first nationwide survey on daycare showed 50,000 more places were needed in daycare centres or private homes--over and above the 30,000 places available now.

About 120,000 pre-schoolers are on the waiting list for a two-day-a-week placement, which translates into 50,000 full-time spaces.

The study said demand would increase by 21 per cent by 2015. Susanne Stern, head of the research project, said federal funding covered only about half the costs of operating a creche and local councils must step up with more daycare subsidies and financial incentives for parents,

Companies could also play a bigger role by setting up their own day nurseries for the children of employees, and cantons should play a coordinating role in providing more services, she added.
