Cigarette prices to rise.

The SFr 10-a-pack deterrent supported by Swiss President Pascal Couchepin isn't in the cards at this point, but the price of a smoke will rise by summer.

According to the Federal Health Office, the price of a pack will probably increase between SFr 0.50 and SFr 0.50 in 2009, putting the average cost at around SFr 6.50.

Office director Thomas Zeltner says a ten per cent price hike can reduce smoking by five per cent, but any decision to increase the price to SFr 10 would have to be approved by parliament. Cabinet is only empowered to approve an increase of SFr 0.90.
