This April, Zurich's hugely popular Kunsthaus will be celebrating its centenary. The building--designed by famous Zurich architect Carl Moser--was intended to be neither museum nor gallery, rather a mixture of the two. The name Kunsthaus (house of art) was consciously taken to illustrate the democratic vision behind the concept, as well as to bring art to a wider public audience.

The Kunsthaus, which enjoyed a six per cent increase in visitor numbers in 2009, is planning a series of special events and exhibitions to mark this landmark in its history. Common to all these centenary events will be a focus on the Kunsthaus's own collection and its ties to Zurich, as well as museum patrons and the artists who have benefited from exposure in the city.

Events begin on April 17 with an open house, when members of the public will be invited to concert and film premieres, art and architecture tours, as well as discussion forums. Additionally, Kunsthaus...
