According to the Swiss Employers' Association, the number of illegal workers is on the rise in Switzerland and the country is among the top 10 in OECD's list of nations with the fastest increase in illegal employment.

A study published in 2002 estimated that up to a million people--foreigners and Swiss--work illegally here, earning around CHF40 billion ($30.4 billion) a year. This accounts for up to 10 per cent of the GDP.

One of the main concerns here is the loss of tax revenue and social welfare contributions on income earned by illegal workers.
