Beautiful botanicals.

Fonction Lifestyle: girlfriend guide

Spring is upon us and as we awake from our winter slumber the warming sun entices us out of our houses and into the beauty of Switzerland. The rolling green and glorious hills are accented by some of the world's most coveted natural herbs and flowers, sought after for their natural healing properties.

Swiss natural health pioneer, Alfred Vogel (1902-1996) was convinced that nature gives us everything we need for the protection and preservation of our health. He was among a handful of visionaries in the early 1900's who were able to cultivate natural botanicals to develop some authentically Swiss brands.

As the snow begins to fade and beautiful Crocus flowers appear throughout Swiss meadows, we are discovering some of the naturally abundant herbs and flowers available to us along hiking trails, in our local farmers markets and delicately packaged for consumption through age-old secret family recipes. This spring, Girlfriend Guide is exploring some of our favorite Swiss herb formulations and discoveries.

We begin our journey in Appenzellerland

Did you know:

Appenzellerland is the herbal discovery destination within Switzerland. Since Summer 2010, an eleven-station pathway lures hikers into an exciting journey to learn about interesting facts on nutrition, colds, rheumatism, tension, stress and digestion on the route between Schaflisegg to Waldegg (or vice versa). The Nutzkrautergarten serves as the kitchen herb supplier for the restaurant Waldegg and the A.Vogel Health Center. Here, there are 120 varieties of medicinal and culinary herbs, among many other plants, fruits and vegetables. On request, herbs can be hand-picked from the garden as part of cooking events for small groups.

While in Appenzellerland, discover the secret of the Appenzeller Alpenbitter. This "genie in a bottle" is a Swiss national treasure made from a secret family recipe of 42 herbs. Often consumed as a digestif, this herb liqueur is made from 100% natural ingredients and without chemical additives.... we like ours "on the rocks"!

For those looking to hydrate with a non-alcoholic beverage, enjoy yourself an Appenzell Flauder from the beverage section of any local market. An exquisite combination of herbs planted in the Santis region of Appenzell are blended to create a light and refreshing drink available in Original, Quitten & Rhabarber or Holunderbeeren flavors. Flavors of elderflower and lemon are delicately wrapped in glass bottles for maximum freshness.
