Growth starts with Appenzell Ausserrhoden: Appenzell has a relaxing, beautiful landscape with green hills, lakes and mountain views. Its friendly residents and good food, such as the world-famous Appenzeller cheese, Alpenbitter and Quollfrisch-beer attract many visitors to 'Appenzellerland'. Additionally, Ausserrhoden--one of the two Appenzeller half cantons--is an ideal spot for companies, investors and employees.

Today, our main industries are electronics, electro-technics, life sciences and services. Huber + Suhner, a leading global supplier of components for electrical and optical connectivity, is the largest employer in our canton. At its headquarters in Herisau, 950 staff are employed out of a worldwide total of around 3,200.

Furthermore, our canton is renowned for its health services, namely seven private hospitals, the public hospital, Spitalverbund, which employs around 900 people, and many alternative doctor and dental practices.

Ausserrhoden's capital city, Herisau, has 15,000 inhabitants and over 40 dentists. For this reason, the city attracts many patients both in Switzerland and from abroad.

In former times, the production of textiles and lumber was important, but though still in existence, these two areas have lost their importance over the last twenty years to newer sectors. The same can be said of agriculture. In the not-so-distant past, the majority of Appenzell residents made their living through agriculture, but today that has dropped to just 7.6 per cent as the canton has developed.

For example, office space in the trendy Zurich-West area would cost around SFr 450 per square metre and about SFr 550 in Geneva, while a similar space in Herisau would cost only around SFr 200 per square metre.

For similar jobs, salaries in Ausserrhoden are much lower than in many other areas of Switzerland. From a business perspective, keeping in mind that much of the expenditure of service-based companies is on salaries, this fact could become extremely important. In addition, companies have the possibility of recruiting staff from neighbouring Austria and Germany due to their proximity.
