Asylum seekers go underground.

Swiss cities such as that of Zurich feel that they have been shut out of the latest Parliamentary debate leading to restrictions on asylum procedures and immigration. They are warning that the latest clampdown might cause some asylum seekers to go underground and ultimately resort to crime to support themselves.

The Federal Refugee Office reports that many of the 1500 asylum applicants refused between April 1st and July 31st had disappeared from the system.

In a one-day conference organised by the city of Zurich on the matter, city and town representatives and social welfare urged the federal authorities to listen to their concerns through consulting a delegation of their representatives in planning their strategies and solutions on the matter.
