Art Basel: a portrait.

Founded by Ernst Beyeler, Trudi Bruckner and Balz Hilt, three art gallerists from Basel, Art Basel has become one of the worlds most popular contemporary art fairs. In 1970, the three started to contemplate a new international event to showcase artists, galleries and, above all, new trends in art.

The Art Basel opening was a resounding success with more than 13,000 visitors arriving. After only six editions, Art Basel reached 300 galleries, a number it still fulfills today. During its 45 year history, the show has expanded its platform remarkably. Never a stagnant entity, the organisers introduced new fair sectors, always keeping up with emerging talents, new galleries and pioneer exhibitions. They also turned the classic rules of art shows upside down, introducing "Unlimited", devoted to outsized sculptures, largescale installations, video projections and live performances. Last, but not least, they created a further two events at Miami Beach and Hong Kong, facilitating the dialogue between the Eastern and Western art worlds.

Despite its key role in promoting different artistic disciplines, Art Basel also has a reputation as a major buying venue. It has many stakeholders of whom to meet the expectations of. Apart from satisfying the art connoisseur, Art Basel has to guarantee gallerists the possibility to acquire new works and discover cutting-edge artists of the emerging art scene. The fair is a marketplace as well as the perfect place to meet and discuss the future of art.

If you are a gallerist, an artist, a collector, or simply passionate about art, you cannot miss the largest art event in the world. Art Basel will take place from the 19th-22nd of June.
