A heavy tax on alcopops has come into force, with the intention to stop under-age drinkers getting hooked to the popular drinks. However, the effectiveness of the tax is not too certain, as many young drinkers say they will continue to buy the beverages despite the price hike.

The Swiss parliament decided to quadruple the CHFO tax on a bottle of alcopop from CHF0.45 to CHF1.80. This would increase the price of a 275ml bottle to over CHF4 from the current CHF2.50.
