Lausanne Estivale

Keels an eye out for M'zelle Zoupettela, the friendly clown distributing the programme on Wednesdays and Saturdays for the 36th edition of Lausanne's jam-packed, varied summer festival. Rain or shine, day or night, venues all across town will come alive with shows and cultural activities for young and old. This year, a special flavour will be added in the form of food tastings and organised picnics, as Lausanne celebrates its status as 2012 City of Taste.

Montreux Jazz Festival

What started off as one man's dream has grown into one of the best-known music festivals in Switzerland. Every year, some 220,000 visitors undertake the musical pilgrimage to Montreux to join in the unique and eclectic celebrations of the past, present and future of the music industry. Spread out over a number of concert hails, the festival also features free concerts along Lake Geneva. This year's line up includes Amy Macdonald, Hugh Laurie, Ed Sheeran, Bob Dylan and Van Morrison.

Moon & Stars Locarno

It is for good reason that this youngster on the Swiss festival scene has been nicknamed the Montreux of the Southern Alps'. The stunning setting of Piazza Grande has given Moon & Stars an impressive pull with A list international stars. The stage is set at one end of the historic square, while all along the arched walkway restaurants offer special menus to those who would rather watch from a distance. This year's line-up includes Lenny Kravitz, Elton John and Herbert Gronemeyer.

Avenches Festival d'Opera

This 'under the stars' classical event has made opera accessible to some 600,000 spectators since 1995. Elevating the carefully selected pieces of music is a unique atmosphere created by the magical setting inside two-thousand-year old Roman arenas. where once gladiators fought out their battles. For the 18th edition of Avenches Opera, Eric Vigie takes us on a journey into 19th-century Paris, where we follow in the footsteps of Mimi, Rodolfo and their friends.

Openair Frauenfeld

Frauenfeld is stepping it up once again, as it hosts Switzerland's largest open-air event, which also happens to be Europe's largest hiphop festival--this year's additions include another reggae stage. 50,000 fans wilt be descending on the pretty meadowland setting each day to hear some of rite biggest names in rap, hip-hop and grime take to the microphone. The 2012 line-up features 50 Cent, Ms Lauryn Hill. Drave and Sean Paul.
