Summary

Scottsdale Airpark, Arizona, may just be your next destination to indulge in Scandinavian contemporary design. The Center of Modern Design has opened in an 8,500-square-foot space which includes shop-in-shop areas for such design icons from the north as Bang & Olufsen, Hastens Beds and Georg Jensen. Bodil and Chris )0rgensen, who earlier started the internet based Danish design retailer House of Copenhagen seem to be on a mission - to gather the very best of Nordic design under one roof and at one site. "Our goal was to be the place in the U.S. where you can see all the important masters," says Chris Jergensen, who has filled this designer's Mecca with the likes of Arne Jacobsen, Harts Wegner, Finn Juhl, Bruno Matthson, and Alvar Aalto. The store and showroom can also be transformed into a 100-seat conference room and theater, meant to be used by other companies for product launches or design-related events. "We wanted to create a destination store and event center for architects and designers," explains Jtsrgensen. "The space is available as a service to help connect the design community with suppliers and clients."

1. Simplicity and beauty - most attractive. The most beautiful every-day object we saw was the new chair by Finnish furniture designer Terhi Tuominen. It's called "Fold" and has finely detailed angles, which create 3-D dimensions. "Fold" is smart, lightweight, and classic. A Scandinavian blond beauty for the connoisseur of fine design. Its predecessor, Tuominen's mesh-covered steel chair "Blackbird", was honored through the red dot award, product design 2008. We foresee equally good things for Fold, www.terhituominen.com

3. Most nostalgic. Swedish Kasthall, the 119-year old rug virtuoso, celebrates 20 years of working with in-house designer Gunilla Lagerhem Ullberg with a jubilee rug appropriately named "Daisy". Lagerhem Ullbergsays some porcelain cups from the 1950's inspired her, and dainty "Daisy" indeed has a 50-ish feel to it, but it's fresh and modern at the same time, www.kasthall.com
