The torturous process of becoming a Swiss. Pros and cons of naturalisation.

Any foreigner who has been granted a C Permit can live in switzerland indefinitely. Yet every year thousands of people choose to go one step further and become Swiss citizens. Last year, in fact, was a record year for naturalisation: over 30,000 people became Swiss, 40 per cent more than in 1999. Almost one quarter of these new citizens were Italians, and another 19 per cent were Croats, Bosnians, Serbs and other ex-Yugoslavians. Thanks to their newly acquired citizenship, all of them can now vote, initiate a referendum, and run for office. They are also protected from deportation and can always return to Switzerland, no matter how long they have been away.
