Transport aircraft news.

The 1991 Gulf War and subsequent large-scale operations in Afghanistan and Iraq have underlined the vital role played by both strategic and intra-theatre transports. Across the logistics spectrum, existing aircraft are being upgraded and new designs are being developed. The following review outlines progress with some of the principal transports in roughly ascending order of size.

The lightweight end of the current range is represented by the 8.1-tonne Eads-Casa C-212-400 with two Honeywell TPE331 turboprops. More than 460 military and civil C-212s have been sold to 42 countries. However, within a few years Eads may find that its monopoly of this market sector is challenged by the 12.5-tonne Sukhoi Su-80, with two General Electric CT7 turboprops providing almost twice as much power.
