Switzerland's decision to join the United Nations is expected to have an impact on its foreign relations. Swiss Foreign Minister Joseph Deiss talks about how Switzerland's foreign policy will change as a result of its new role as a full member of the UN.

Swiss News: How will the UNO status change Switzerland's foreign policy?

Joseph Deiss: Switzerland will become a full member of the UN most likely on September 10th, the date on which the 57th UN General Assembly begins. One important element people tend to forget is that we have been active within the UN system as a member of all the special organizations and committees, so it's not like we're starting from scratch.

SN: What would he a highlight of such non-member activity in the past?

Deiss: One good example is our involvement with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). We are a full member of the UNDP and one of its top ten [financial] contributo...
