Summary
The parting of ways for Norway and Sweden was "a happy and peaceful divorce after all," said Norwegian novelist and historian Karsten Alnæs of Oslo. In 1813, Sweden contributed to a decisive defeat of Napoleon and then attacked Denmark. Sweden's Crown Prince Carl Johan succeeded in forcing Denmark to cede Norway to the king of Sweden in January of 1814.
