Fighter production is transitioning from well-established aircraft to a new generation that offers major advances, in extreme cases combining short field performance, supercruise, thrust-vectoring and stealth. However, many air forces will be satisfied with upgrades and derivatives of established designs.
Illustrating the longevity of basically good fighter designs, Pakistan is purchasing a batch of up to 40 Chengdu F-7MGs, the latest Chinese development of the MiG-21.
