Long-range anti-tank punch: developed to defeat tanks, long-range anti-tank guided weapons are more often used to attack bunkers, buildings and technical infrastructure.

US forces launched more than 7000 Raytheon BGM-71 Tow (Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided) anti-tank missiles during Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. Only a handful of these, used during the invasion of Iraqi in March 2003, were targeted at armoured vehicles. More typical of the use of anti-tank missiles in modern combat operations was the ten missiles fired by the troops of the 101st Airborne Division at the 'safe house' in which Qusay and Uday Hussein were hiding in Mosul in July 2003. The Israel Defence Force typically uses the Lockheed Martin Hellfire and the Rafael Spike launched from helicopters to target Hezbollah insurgents. Ironically, the most recent use of anti-tank missiles against what they are intended for - tanks - was during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict when Hezbollah fighters used Russian missiles against Israeli Merkavas.
