The singular attractiveness of the water-front real estate is evident from the fact that [Malm]ö and Skåne were recently selected as one of the preliminary race venues of the 32nd America's Cup sailing competition. The arrival of a fleet of exclusive racing yachts and 12 teams from 10 different countries (August 24-September 4) is hailed as "the biggest thing to ever happen to Scandinavian sailing."

International expectations are sky-high when it comes to modern Danish architecture. This is especially true now that Copenhagen in January 2005 opened the doors of its sensational new opera and ballet house, which is located on the island of Holmen. Danish/Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson created three beautiful light sculpture chandeliers for the building which are simply dazzling. The wall of the auditorium facing the foyer, shaped like a gigantic pumpkin, is clad with maple wood, and the ceiling in the main auditorium is adorned with 105,000 sheets of 24 carat gold leaf. Local enthusiasm for the gorgeous opera house is so great that all performances are sold out for the foreseeable future, and tours of the building are also fully booked until the autumn.
