According to Strabo and Agathemerus (Greek geographers from the first and third centuries AD), the pre-Socratic philosopher Anaximander (c. 610 BC to 546 BC) was the first to publish a map of the [then known] world. This map was produced to improve navigation and trade around the Mediterranean and Black Sea regions and, most importantly, was a tool used by Thales Miletos to 'convince' the Ionian city-states to join a federation 'for security reasons'.
