Integral to any mechanised force are wheeled or tracked armoured personnel carriers and infantry fighting vehicles that provide their occupants with armour protection. Peace support operations in Yugoslavia suggested the advantages of providing protected mobility for light infantry forces while the asymmetric threat to coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan has made this a necessity.

As the force of choice for early-entry operations, the US Marine Corps has historically sought to keep the number of heavy armoured vehicles in its inventory to a minimum. At the time of the 2003 invasion of Iraq the US Marine Corps was equipped with only two armoured carriers: the BAE Systems tracked AAV7A1 amphibious assault vehicle, which was designed for the initial stages of an amphibious landing operation, and the General Dynamics 8 x 8 LAV-25, which equipped the service's light armoured reconnaissance battalions.
