The relationship of fear to design was tackled in various forums by an impressive cast of international speakers. Some of the design stars who came to Stockholm to participate and pontificate were: Inga Sempe, one of France's hottest designers; Tom Dixon and George Sowden of the UK; Massimo Morozzi of Italy; Claudy Jongstra of the Netherlands; Belgian furniture designer Dirk Wynants; Marimekko's Kirsti Paakkanen of Finland and "virtual" architect Hani Rashid of the USA.

Some of the most modest exhibits were the most effective. I liked a display called "Exorcise Your Fear" which consisted of an open booth dominated by a gigantic chrome spike. On the side of the booth was a tablet with empty sheets of paper. Festival visitors were asked to take a squeaky pen and jot down their worst fear on a piece of paper, and then pierce that fear on the spike. What a super idea!

Interestingly, it wasn't the big world-shattering types of fears that people chose to exorcise, instead, they named personal and ordinary worries: "That everyone will know my secrets," "that I will never find someone to love," "that I will be alone" were some of the dark thoughts that people expressed anonymously and then spiked. This seemed like wonderful therapy.
