During the 'second Lebanon war' in mid-2006 Hezbollah fighters used Russian, Chinese and North Korean anti-tank weapons to damage ten per cent of the 400 or so Merkava tanks deployed by Israel; the 30 tank crewmembers killed during the conflict represented one-quarter of the service's casualties. The proliferation of cheap and easy-to-operate shoulder-launched rocket-propelled grenades has also taken other forces deployed around the world by surprise, and Major General Benjamin Gantz, head of Israel's Land Forces Command, stated that the introduction of an advanced active protection system (APS) for armoured fighting vehicle crews was one of his priorities.
