Renaissance for the aircraft carrier.

In the early days of Operation 'Iraqi Freedom' vital air support was paralysed because sandstorms had pinned aircraft down to their airfields. The situation was only remedied when the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln made a rapid transit to the other side of the weather front allowing its aircraft to be used to prepare the way for the Coalition advance.

Forty years ago, the day of the aircraft carrier in the face of satellite reconnaissance and missiles seemed to be over. Yet today, more navies are seeking these ships as their value in modern, network-centric warfare becomes more obvious with missions up to 1000 nautical miles inland being recorded in 2001 against targets in Afghanistan.
