Summary
"[Anders Zorn] was very clever with light," [Vebjorn Sand] explained. "It's not just about painting and colors, but also how you handle the models. Zorn has been a role model for me. As an artist he is a phenomenon. He worked during a period when art history was written in terms of evolution," Sand said. "He was active during the height of impressionism, but unapologetically referred back at Diego Velazquez. Zorn, John Singer Sargent and Joaquin Sorolla were among the few who did so, and from a technical point of view, those three were the best in the world. It's only been during the last few years that we are discovering again how great they were, their enormous quality."
Sand is not the only artist from Norway to be inspired by the Renaissance and Baroque approaches to painting. "It's strange that this trend arose in Norway, but I guess once it started even Swedes, such as Christopher Rådlund, who also paints in this tradition, chose to live in Norway," Sand noted. "Right now there is a good environment for this tradition of painting." Odd Nerdrum is perhaps Norway's most famous living artist, with famous fans including David Bowie."For example, the bridge is one of our oldest metaphors, and I wanted to mediate the Renaissance dualistic message about the meeting between earth and heaven," he explains. "We are people on earth but have heaven inside us." Trends don't interest him. "When I went to the Academy, all the professors were abstract painters, and I saw how they tried to forget about tradition and history. Today, there are professors in electronics rather than a professor in etching. I don't see the point. I am aware of the trends, but I don't grow from them. For me that is what art is about, to grow personally as a human being."See the full content of this document
