The Swiss Osborne House commissioned by Queen Victoria

The Swiss Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, off the English south coast, continues to be preserved in honor of Queen Victoria who used it as a retreat house for her family. The Osborne House, built in 1845-52 at Queen Victoria's expense, is an Italianate building with tall campanille towers and terrace gardens overlooking the waters of the Solent near East Cowes. Queen Victoria spent most of her time in the Swiss cottage after the untimely death of her beloved consort and first cousin Prince Albert.
