Packing a punch -- cannon ammunition; cannon are often overlooked when armoured warfare is considered. While most attention is usually given to the large calibre armour perforators, the smaller cannon calibres tend to get side-tracked. Yet in numerical and utility terms they can form the backbone of mechanised infantry fire support, as well as for low level air defence and numerous naval applications. Bearing in mind that for cannon, as with any similar system, the ammunition forms the weapon, the cannon acting as the delivery system, cannon ammunition is therefore well worthy of a survey. While cannon calibres from 20 to 35 mm have been the norm for years, larger cannon are now becoming accepted -- so we will extend the envelope up to, and including, 57 mm.
