A New Dawn for Airlift.
The ageing of America's airlift fleet and the post-Cold War need for Euro-Nato forces to deploy out-of-area have jointly created demands for transport aircraft upgrades and a wave of new purchases and leasing arrangements.
America's logistic needs have been defined in the recent Mobility Requirements Study for 2005 (MRS-05) as a peak strategic daily airlift of about 88 million tonne-kilometres. Approximately 40 per cent of that total can be provided by the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (Craf), but the US Air Force's Air Mobility Command (AMC) can contribute only a further 54 per cent, leaving a 6 per cent shortfall.
