Kitting up for tomorrow.

Soldier modernisation programmes across the world are grappling with the problem of piling greater capabilities onto the soldier. Boosting situational awareness, protection, lethality and surveillance capabilities without weighing them down nor making squads unduly tethered to sources of re-supply is the key to the what is, without undue hyperbole, a true revolution in the infantryman's ability to impact the battlefield.

Although many countries are embarking upon Soldier Modernisation Programmes (SMP), conventional wisdom is that within Nato there will only be four national programmes developing largely national solutions to meet the challenge. France, Germany, Britain and the United States will then provide component elements as building blocks to other countries' solutions.
