A gift of art for the United Nations: on joining the United Nations, Switzerland takes some soothing and classy Swiss art and architecture to the main UN building in New York--a place that has seen many a high profile diplomats in action.

In September 2002, Switzerland finally became a member of the United Nations. As custom has it, new members never enter empty, handed. An appropriate present had to be chosen. Obviously, a cuckoo clock would not qualify, nor would a merrily painted Swiss polyester cow. Swiss diplomats were in deep agony, but fortunately the organisation itself came to the rescue.
