Educated in Egypt and Jerusalem, he began his career with a Swiss investment firm after earning a master's degree at New York's Columbia University. In 1962, he married a Swiss woman, Jacqueline Burgauer. Six years later, at the age of 33, he was named managing director of the Rothschild bank's new Zurich branch.
