For the purposes of the present discussion--and to keep its scope within reasonable bounds--the benchmark for these larger airlifters is taken to be the capability to deploy the LAV III light armoured vehicle, as produced by General Dynamics Land Systems--Canada. The LAV III is based on the Piranha III developed by Mowag, which is now part of General Dynamics' European Land Combat Systems (ELCS). Using GDLS figures (which differ slightly from the Mowag version), the LAV III is 7.19 metres long, 2.62 metres high and 2.62 metres wide. This width currently rules out the use of anything smaller than a Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules. The LAV III has an unladen weight of 14.25 tonnes and a maximum gross weight of 17.25 tonnes.
