In 1961, the twenty-year-old Agneta Eckerström arrived in New York to take up a guide position at the United Nations. Ideally suited for the challenge, since as a graduate of the elite French school in Stockholm, she was already fluent in several languages. During a visit to California the next year, she co-founded "Miss Sweden," a trading company that launched bikinis and other new bathing suit designs in America. In 1963, she married Gunnar Nilsson, SAS Airline's Station Manager in Los Angeles. Ms. Nilsson's domestic bliss didn't preclude her from continuing a busy and impressive career. She began importing children's clothing from Scandinavia, and she opened a weaving studio in the family garage at her Manhattan Beach (California) home.
