Surprisingly, given the South American sexiness of her designs, [Minna Parikka] isn't a particular fan of tango, as so many Finns are, but recalls her mother setting a glamorous example. "She'd be wearing red nails and lipstick even when she was changing my nappies." A pair of red patent Mary Janes kick-started her love of shoes when she was five, but it wasn't until her elder sister, a photojournalist, interviewed a shoe designer, that 15-year-old Minna realized such a wondrous job existed. After studying in England, she was immediately employed by a small Italian firm designing men's shoes, where she learned the trade's practicalities. Having lived in London and Barcelona, she has returned to Helsinki where she feels less pressure to jump at the next new thing and can let her ideas evolve at their own pace.
