For many years Farnborough has been dominated by the baffle between Boeing and Airbus for the sale of commercial airliners. This rivalry was given an added intensity prior to this year's event, when the American Government Accountability Office on 18 June upheld Boeing's protest of the US Air Force's award of the $ 35 billion KC-X tanker contract to the Northrop Grumman/Eads team. In a presidential election year the relative merits of the Boeing KC-767 and the Airbus A330 tankers are likely to be drown out by claim and claim-counter about the economic benefits of the competing designs.
