A rising star: Swiss artist Ernest Bieler: the painter is already famed for his early 20th-century depictions of Valais life. Now, with a major exhibit and publication on the way--and his art market prices edging into seven figures--he is heading for far greater renown.

Ernest Bieler was born on July 31, 1863 in Rolle, Canton Vaud. His father Samuel, a French-trained veterinarian, had been orphaned as a child. Nathalie de Butzow, Ernest Bieler's mother, was a music- and art-loving polyglot of Finnish-Polish parentage. Her Finnish father worked as a diplomat, providing an international and cosmopolitan lifestyle for his family, until his unexpected death caused the family to fall on hard times.
