Since the end of the Cold War, submarine ownership has become 'democratised'. A growing number of nations are seeking the capability to perform attacks on other submarines and surface shipping, launch missiles against coastal and land targets and deliver special forces from beneath the waves. Technological innovations in submarine design have been imperative in driving this growth of submarine acquisition.
