One of Denmark's most unusual design icons is the Vipp, a classic trash can which one opens with a foot pedal. For more than 60 years, the receptacle for garbage looked pretty much the same as when it was first made by Holger Nielsen's metal workshop in 1939. It has been sold to hospitals, clinics and hotels because it combines robust and functional virtues with a lean aesthetic.
