Contemplating new careers: if you are in this country with a Swiss or a foreign spouse, who has a valid Swiss work permit, you can work, too. Here are some things to consider before you begin job-hunting.

If you haven't looked for a job, you may not realise that you do not need a work permit to job-hunt. It is up to your Swiss employer to get that for you. All you need is a legally employed spouse and proof that you are an official resident of this country.

But be prepared for the fact that many Swiss employers may scorn your hard-won foreign credentials. A high-school diploma will not be recognised as equivalent to the Swiss school-leavers' Matura (Maturite); a BA or BS from a foreign college with not carry the same weight as a Swiss university degree; and even a lawyer, doctor, or engineer may find his or her training under fire.
