Common (ground) sense.

one of the major considerations when deploying unattended ground sensor technology is that no single detector, be it acoustic, electro-optical, magnetic, seismic, infrared or radar-based, can provide complete coverage of all targets at all ranges. The user instead needs to consider a layered approach, with the deployment of several different fully-connected sensor types to provide as full a picture as possible of the locale under surveillance.

Unattended ground sensors can fill many roles and even, in certain cases, replace the anti-personnel mine as a warning device. However, as said in our introduction, there is no panacea, and a seismic sensor designed to detect the arrival of a tank at long range will not be suitable to pick the approach of a man on foot.
