For the love of foreigners: it's a curious trend: every third Swiss marriage is binational. Nearly twice the rate in Germany and France, it appears this phenomenon is distinctly, albeit paradoxically, Swiss.

"It wasn't an issue at all for me to marry someone from abroad," says Jurgen, whose wife Bea is from a small country town in Germany.

Perhaps it is Switzerland's small size and central location in Europe that prompts its citizens to look for love beyond its borders. But those very same characteristics have also engendered a strong sense of boundaries.
