The Hedmans were city folks from Nacka, a southern suburb of Stockholm, where Gerd worked as a physical therapist in the giant Nacka Hospital and [Anders Hedman] was an independent building contractor and constructor of kakelugnar -- traditional tile stoves. In 1994, Gerd felt it would be interesting to gain some professional experience abroad and took a position in Carbondale, in southern Illinois. Following a couple of visits, Anders sold his business and moved over to join her.
