Artillery Mainstays -- the Field Howitzers.

For almost every army around the world, the howitzer is the mainstay of the field artillery. Field howitzers provide the main measure of supporting fire for all the other arms, both in the defence and attack phases of any operation. Without the firepower provided by howitzers, towed or self-propelled, the vast bulk of military operations could not take place.

While other calibres continue to exist, the major emphasis is now on either 155 mm (for the Western Bloc) or 152 mm (for the Eastern Bloc, although there are indications that some current user nations will eventually convert to 155 mm).
