"That prompted me to contact the ceo of Saab," the ambassador recalls. "I asked him if this great car from Sweden, which runs on ethanol, is available in the U.S. He said no and explained some of the reasons why. I told him that doesn't make sense to me. There are many people in the u.s. like me who would like to reduce their carbon footprint, who would like to make a more responsible decision on a car, they'd like to have the option of a car which runs on ethanol, so we worked with him through his internal General Motors process, with the assistance of the Departments of Energy and Transportation. As a result, the Saab 9-5 BioPower car will be available for sale in the U.S. next year."

[Michael Wood] is cool as a cucumber during the interview, methodical and articulate. But when asked to provide one or two examples from his list of 48 promising energy innovators, his enthusiasm for the subject comes through: "Can't I give at least three examples?" he asks. "There are literally dozens."

The Rambo apple tree died out in Sweden in the early 18th century. Two centuries later, Ambassador Wood explained, "it has returned to Sweden thanks to the efforts of the Swedish Colonial Society and the University of Agriculture, not to mention the King of Sweden, who came up with 50,000 Swedish kronor to cover the initial costs."

Ambassador Michael Wood: Going for the Green

As a result of his efforts, for example, the United States will soon be getting its first plant for turning sewage waste into fuel for powering vehicles or generating electricity. Ambassador Wood has persistently acted as a sort of matchmaker, introducing Sweden's leading alternative energy companies to U.S. venture capital firms and other investors. The trailblazing Swedish firms are now bringing their innovative ideas to American cities and towns hungry for ways to lighten their carbon foot-print.
