Air transport: no panacea.

Remote in the extreme, and with some of the roughest and most dangerous roads in the world, Afghanistan is demonstrating better than any academic study the need for both strategic and intra-theatre airlifters.

Starting this review at the lightweight end of the transport spectrum, in July 2009 the US Air Force issued an RF1 (request for information) on a Light Mobility Aircraft (Lima) that could carry six passengers or 815 kg of freight over a range of 1667 km and able to operate from badly surfaced airstrips. It was envisaged that 60 such aircraft might be required (apparently to be supplied as military aid to certain allies), with first delivery in FY11 and the last by FY15.
