• Gladmat Food Festival: Food with a Smile

For the tenth consecutive year, the Norwegian port of Stavanger is hosting the Gladmat food festival. For four days in late July dozens of food stalls will crowd around the harbor. In Gladmat's first year 40 exhibitors tested the ground; a decade on, 120 will attend. While visiting Gladmat last summer, I found the harbor filled with heritage boats, overlooked by wooden warehouses - now mostly converted into restaurants. The dockside was crammed with wholesome Scandi types, many with kids in buggies or on shoulders. The ice-cream stalls were doing brisk business and I indulged in a delicious pear sorbet. Peppered salmon steaks sizzled on a grill and a steady stream of pancakes were flipped from a griddle and doused with sour cream and blueberry jam. A sing-along broke out at the café tab...
