When it comes to the airline industry, Gunnar Eklund's credo might just as well be "been there, done that." Over a career that has spanned 34 years, Gunnar has served-and lived-in such diverse countries as Liberia, Iran and Pakistan. Since 1985 he makes his home in the USA where this Swede is as American as they come. Gunnar started out in Stockholm, working for Scandinavian Airlines. After a two year's hiatus in Monrovia, Liberia (where he met his Guyana-born wife, Claudette), he was, after about two years in Stockholm, sent on to Teheran, Iran where he covered sales for Iran and Afghanistan. He arrived there in 1978, just a few weeks prior to the Ayatollah Khomeini's auspicious return from exile in France. Things were getting hot for westerners and Gunnar remembers one particular inci...

One particular group went to Sweden in March this year to pick up their Saab cars, but even more importantly, to experience icy roads and icy beds - combining a unique driving experience with a unique travel experience, staying at the legendary original Ice hotel in Sweden, climbing Sweden's highest mountain and test-driving the latest Saab cars on icy roads. All during an intense week-long trip to Stockholm, to the absolute north of Sweden, and finally to Trollhattan, outside Gothenburg where the car is built.
st impression of Sweden: "Beautiful, but not as cold as I had hoped.
st impression of Sweden: "Trendy."

The concept of Finnish designers Aamu Song and Johan Olin from Company (featured in a recent issue of Nordic Reach) is undoubtedly "futuristic." They have created a hotel without rooms, and without doors or walls between each personal sleeping area. When the guest arrives at "Canopy Village," they creep into their personal space, a cocoon-like bubble below the floor. Sitting in your personal container, your head (and your shoulders, depending upon your height) are above the floor, allowing you to interact with other guests if choose to do so.
At first glance, the room by Swedish designers Karin Lundberg and Rose Marie Andersson appears more traditional than the others. There are two beds, tables, a lamp and all of the normal attributes of a hotel room. But the frames of the beds are not...

The name of the Swedish 17th century village Grythyttan refers to a place where pots are made, since "gryta" means pot, and "hytta" is a smelting-house or foundry. The only problem with this perfectly reasonable-sounding linguistic theory is that, as far as the historians know, no pots have ever been made in Grythyttan!
Don't be surprised if you see the Swedish Prime Minister or various other celebrities strolling by outside your window as you enjoy your meal at Grythyttan Inn. This is a very special inn and restaurant which attracts prominent visitors from all over the world, despite its location a 3 1/2 hours drive from Stockholm. When I visited Grythyttan for a three course dinner in summer 2005, a group of six Brazilian journalists wearing traditional party hats were enjoying a cray...

Oslo's popular Munch Museum is a must-see for any visitor to the Norwegian capital. But the museum housing prominent works by one of the world's most beloved expressionists has suffered serious security problems lately, and many suggest that more space is needed to display the paintings. The Munch Museum recently reopened after audacious robbers grabbed Edvard Munch's masterpieces "Scream" and "Madonna.
Some favorite sweaters become threadbare around the elbows, or the arms may start to sag towards the ground after a decade or so. But murdering a sweater...isn't that a bit extreme? Be that as it may, an exhibition this fall at Röhsska design museum called "Do, redo" inspired visitors to experience the noble art of knitware recycling. Old washedout wool sweaters -- donated by the Salvat...

My astrological sign is Cancer, and Cancers are home-loving by nature. I was born in [Varberg] and I never felt like leaving! Just look at [Kallis], right upstairs there's a little place for the ladies to sit and drink coffee after their bath - it's so pretty! The walk by the sea front used to be what was typical for the city, and it's lovely to take a stroll there any time of the year. I certainly do. Now Varberg is also famous for its shoe business. It has become a shoe center, but I find it good for any kind of shopping - whatever you need, you can find here. And if you enjoy playing golf or horseback riding, then Varberg is ideal!
