In an interview, Jocelyn Wyatt, head of IDEO's social innovation design domain, talked about the power of design to change the world. IDEO began 30 years ago by designing products. However, over time they've applied the approach of human-centered design to services, spaces, businesses and systems. They believe in the power of design thinking to enrich and transform, and to take on big challenges that the world faces, from climate change to education and health care to financial inclusion. They are currently working with Acumen Fund on a water project in India and Kenya. They have developed a social marketing campaign to spread awareness about the importance of drinking safe water and a water delivery business and cart for female micro-entrepreneurs to deliver water in slum communities. ...

Created for Italy's largest retail chain, Coop, Africa Community Projects (ACP) was set up in 2008 by ITCs Programme. With ITC working as an intermediary, the project connects thousands of marginalized artisans to international markets through partnerships with high-end fashion houses and distributors. To operate effectively, the program developed the 'Hub' -- a large workshop located in Nairobi's industrial area that also serves as a product development center, storage space and regional headquarters for ACP projects. At the Hub, quality control staff check all the materials upon delivery, work spaces axe cleaned twice daily and the conformity of individual products are verified as they go through the different units, before undergoing a final check for packing and ship...

Tia Salmela Keobounpheng, daughter of well-known Finnish-American architect David Salmela, makes jewelry that is at once sensibly Scandinavian and youthfully American. There are big red hoop earrings in acrylic that are irresistibly like candy, but there are also more formal grown-up earrings and necklaces in wood that are elegant and effortless. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree, and growing up Salmela Keobounpheng was constantly exposed to her father's paintings, sculptures, and furniture.
My parents created a world that was safe and controlled but also limitless when it came to trying new things and dreaming big," she reflects back. "They exposed me and my siblings to spaces and buildings and objects that my friends certainly weren't exposed to, and I absorbed my everyday lif...

Fortunately, [Adjaye] is much less fatalistic when it comes to his architecture. As the first years of the twenty-first century unfolded, his work seemed to enter a new phase. By his mid-thirties, Adjaye, whose parents come from Ghana, was already one of Britain's most prolific young architects. When he was commissioned to design five public buildings in a three-year period, his media profile skyrocketed, and his projects received critical acclaim. In the course of his work, Adjaye discovered that his romantic principles slightly conflicted with the modernist contexts that he finds himself working in. "I make a serious effort to try to deliver something that has meaning," he said. "But if 1 try to live up to my own ideals I will never succeed, so I figure there's something very beautifu...

The central section of the house has been dedicated to the kitchen and dining areas. The kitchen sits in a semi-recess, cleverly defining its parameters without encroaching on the open-plan design of the overall space. The stainless steel of the kitchen contrasts beautifully with brightly coloured handmade Portuguese tiles by Ceramica de Bicesse. Effective storage solutions are key to the design of small spaces, especially in the kitchen, where storage has been incorporated on three levels. A stainless steel rail mounted onto the tiled splashback ensures regularly used items are kept off the main work surface yet within easy reach, while the positioning of the window allows the windowsill to be used as an extra shelf. Further storage is provided by open shelving that stretches the lengt...
