In an interview, Jocelyn Wyatt, head of IDEO's social innovation design domain, talked about the power of design to change the world. IDEO began 30 years ago by designing products. However, over time they've applied the approach of human-centered design to services, spaces, businesses and systems. They believe in the power of design thinking to enrich and transform, and to take on big challenges that the world faces, from climate change to education and health care to financial inclusion. They are currently working with Acumen Fund on a water project in India and Kenya. They have developed a social marketing campaign to spread awareness about the importance of drinking safe water and a water delivery business and cart for female micro-entrepreneurs to deliver water in slum communities. ...

The study tries to answer the following questions: Will exposure to world agricultural prices generate more poverty or less? To what extent will households be affected by changes in agricultural trade polices? Do multilateral agricultural liberalization matter more than bilateral changes? Results of simulations using a computable general equilibrium (CGE) model linked to household survey data suggest that trade liberalization has only modest effects on the level of GDP, but it has a substantial effect in reducing poverty. Moreover, the combined effects of global and domestic liberalization are more pro-poor than the effect of domestic liberalization alone. [PUB ABSTRACT]

In an integrated global economy, specialisation in trade is an increasingly prominent strategy. A labor-abundant, resource-rich economy like Indonesia faces stiff competition in labor-intensive manufactures; meanwhile, rapid growth in demand for resources from China and India exposes it to the 'curse' of resource wealth. This diminishes prospects for more diversified growth based on renewable resources like human capital. Using an international panel data set we explore the influence of resource wealth, foreign direct investment and human capital on the share of skill-intensive products in exports. FDI and human capital increase this share; resource wealth diminishes it. We use the results to compare Indonesia with Thailand and Malaysia. Indonesia's reliance on skill-intensive export...

There are currently about 20 automobile suppliers with Swedish roots in Michigan, and, according to [Lennart Johansson], there is room for more. "But before attempting to expand to a global market, the suppliers' products need to be established in local markets," he says. "The Swedes are inventive and competent, although they're not great at selling their products or marketing themselves, skills that Americans practice in school." However, Lennart believes that with focus and unique product solutions, Swedish suppliers will continue to be successful competitors in global markets. "Especially now that the trend is to give suppliers commissions to deliver entire technical solutions, from product development to delivery - an area where the Swedes already possess expertise," he adds.

This article describes general budget support as an instrument of development cooperation. Based on poverty reduction strategies, poorer developing countries are increasingly receiving general budget support which enables their governments to carry out their core responsibilities more effectively. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risks are discussed in a holistic approach. In view of aid effectiveness and efficiency, the author draws on an evaluation which was carried out in the context of the DAC/OECD in 2006, as well as on experience made in Switzerland's budget support engagement. He argues that the budget support methodology could also inspire the cooperation with non-governmental organisations.
