How do you translate Danish food to suit Americans? It doesn't have to be translated. It's Mama's kind of cooking. Heavy food with a lot of gravy. A little bit like the South here. You don't have to do much with old-fashioned Danish food. It's meat and potatoes.
How do you translate Norwegian food to suit Americans? It can't be used entirely the way it is. We certainly make certain compromises and concessions at our restaurant. Several restaurants have tried putting smorgasbords together, for example, and failed because they didn't understand the concept. When we serve Jansson's Frestelse (Jansson's Temptation), we use a slightly milder combination of herring anchovies so it doesn't have such a fishy flavor. You have to be a bit more subtle. You don't want people to wonder, "Has this fi...

The Swedish capital's fashion frenzy during Stockholm's fashion week in August is mainly about showing and selling garments. But it's also an opportunity for the nation's glitterati to sip sponsored champagne at nightclubs and museums, for celebrities to strut and pose for TV cameras and for sharp-elbowed journalists to jostle for the best seats by the catwalks.
Sweden's fashion week is a relatively modest affair in many respects. Sure, you need to have a connection to the industry (or be the friend of someone in the fashion industry) to be invited to most of the shows. And yes, some fashionistas are cold-as-ice snobs. But virtually all guests wait patiently in line to get into the shows - "special" VIPs don't generally get whisked inside early. Even a major fashion queen like Margareth...

I recommend a visit to nearby Râbjerg Mile, the largest shifting sand dune in Northern Europe. One can easily imagine that one is Lawrence of Arabia on the hilly dunes, and they are a great place to fly a kite because of the ever-present wind. The dunes are close to [Skagen]'s Grenen, a steadily expanding finger of beach at the very top of Northern Jutland where one can stand with one foot in two different seas, the Skagerrak and Kattegat.
The most famous artist in this group was Denmark's P.S. Krøyer, whose paintings are among the most-loved in Scandinavian art. (Oneof his paintings completed in 1888 called "Hip, hip hurrah!" portrays a festive picnic, which is the inspiration of a 1987 film of the same name about the Skagen colony, staring Swedish actor Stellan Skarsgård).

Founded in March 2004 by Erik Wachtmeister, 50, the son of a Swedish ambassador to the United States, this exclusive assembly aims to become the world's "leading global social-networking community." In order to join, one has to be invited. But in order to be invited, at least five existing members have to recommend you. But belonging to this ritzy fraternity has its advantages. To celebrate the one-year anniversary of the company, a party was staged in St. Tropez attended by Paris and Nicky Hiltion, Ivan Trump and Sarah Marshall. A Small World isn't for social climbers or celebrity wannabes (although one imagines some among the 75,000-plus members must have snuck in through a back door. "This is an Internet community," says Wachtmeister, "designed for those who already have strong conne...
