Although O-Ringen isn't a world championship per se, it's been won by many elite orienteers - typically someone with a last name that sounds Swedish, Finnish or Norwegian. But some new countries have recently made it into the sport's top echelon. The best male orienteer in the world today is a Frenchman named Thierry Gueorgiou. The best female is Simone N'iggli-Luder of Switzerland. To reach that level, they've trained in Finland and Sweden, respectively.
There's a lot to take in at O-Ringen, but the main attraction is, of course, the orienteering itself. As a first-timer, I was nervous on Day 1. Swedish terrain is very different from Texas terrain. Madeleine FaIk started at the Ballet Academy of Gothenburg, and thanks to a grant from Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson, pursued a career in dancing and acting, eventually ending up in Los Angeles. There she met the love of her life, Louis Garcia, "the world's best trick jump-roper". The pair has since traveled the world as "The Rebel Ropers", performing for Nike in Singapore, on the Today show, at several hotels in Las Vegas, and locally at the House of Blues. Always with a smile, the charming Swede flies through the air - spinning the rope or juggling clubs at the speed of light - while balancing on giant balls, negotiating hoops of fire, at times on stilts. An original member of "Girls on Stilts", she also works with the variety troupe "The Mums". Dancing also led to an impressive c...

This is an amazing place to live," says Western Harbour resident Anne Lisa Georgia James, 30, who was born and raised in Copenhagen. "The view changes every day because there are always new ships coming into the harbour.
The singular attractiveness of the water-front real estate is evident from the fact that [Malm]ö and Skåne were recently selected as one of the preliminary race venues of the 32nd America's Cup sailing competition. The arrival of a fleet of exclusive racing yachts and 12 teams from 10 different countries (August 24-September 4) is hailed as "the biggest thing to ever happen to Scandinavian sailing."
International expectations are sky-high when it comes to modern Danish architecture. This is especially true now that Copenhagen in January 2005 opened the doors of its se...
